Open Letter to Licking County Voters
Dear Voters:
I am a candidate for Judge of the Domestic Relations Court in Licking County. Having spent the last 20 years as a family law attorney, I understand the impact that the judge has on clients, witnesses, attorneys, and schedules. Through hard work, preparation, experience, and knowledge, I have sought fair decisions from the court for my clients. I have represented men who didn't think they could get custody merely because they were men, women who had been emotionally, physically and financially abused by their spouses and grandparents who had to take, and then wanted to keep, custody of their grandchild. I have successfully argued domestic relations cases before the Ohio Supreme Court and am licensed to practice in the U.S. Supreme Court. As committee chair I worked to establish the divorce mediation program in Licking County to spare children from having to endure a custody battle between their parents. I've worked with the Battered Women's Advisory Board to provide a safe haven for abused spouses. I've volunteered my time with the Pro Bono legal clinic to advise individuals without funds about domestic relations matters. I've mentored students who were interested in the legal profession and spoken to various groups about domestic relations matters. This is the area of law to which I have devoted most of my legal career.
In my church, Jacksontown United Methodist, I have been active as youth advisor, planning committee chair (we built a two floor church addition and obtained a modular structure to increase the size of our outreach program), teacher (Sunday School and VBS volunteer), student and secretary of the Church Council. My church has been supportive of me as a person and as a candidate.
Jeff, my husband of 32 years, is a psychologist ("Doctor C") and my unpaid campaign manager. We have one daughter who is a teacher with Newark City Schools. Thankfully our daughter and her husband live locally and have given us 2 wonderful grandchildren. My mother, still lives in Jacksontown, and worked many years for the Lakewood Schools. My immediate family and extended family have been extremely supportive of my decision to seek the position of Judge of the Domestic Relations Court.
On the campaign trail I have attended inspiring events and met wonderful people. It is uplifting – and exhausting. Many of the people I meet admit that they don't vote for judges because they "don't know those people" or they "guess" when voting for judges. Please don't guess; it's too important. Half of the married couples in Licking County will find themselves in Domestic Relations Court. Those people are your relatives, friends, and neighbors. It is important that the right candidate is elected. I am trying to do my job as a candidate and meet as many voters, and provide as much information, as possible.
As the campaign season gears up, please responsibly exercise your right to vote and check out the candidates. Research their reputation with clients and the people involved in the legal system. Feel free to approach me at events or contact me through this website with questions you have about me or the legal system.
I believe you will find that I am the CARING, CAPABLE and COMMITTED choice for Domestic Relations Judge. I would appreciate your vote.
Sincerely,
Vicky M. Christiansen
